eduGAIN
eduGAIN is the inter-federation service that connects and enables cooperation among identity federations from all over the world.
What it is and what the benefits are
Access to eduGAIN is only possible through an identity federation, so participation requires membership in an existing federation.
IDEM joins eduGAIN by applying the following policy:
- all IdPs that join IDEM automatically join eduGAIN , unless they explicitly request to be excluded (opt-out)
- SPs that join IDEM can join eduGAIN only upon explicit request (opt-in)
The benefits of inter-federation are numerous for end users, participating organisations, and service providers alike:
Students, faculty, and researchers can access a vast number of resources dedicated to the world of research and education.
Service providers can reach dozens of identity federations with a single membership.
Organisations can easily and scalably provide their users with access to global services without the costs of establishing dedicated connections.
How it works and who the participants are
The way eduGAIN works is essentially identical to that of identity federations such as IDEM, with the difference that the number of entities present is the sum of entities (SPs and IdPs) from all participating federations.
The number of federations and entities in eduGAIN is continuously growing. The best way to find out whether an entity is present in eduGAIN is to search the entity database:
